warning: this post includes a big ol' bundle of pictures. and they're all great and will fill you with envy and delight. you were warned.
After a few days in Zagreb we climbed aboard a very stuffy bus and drove the 5 hours to Dubrovnik, with a half hour break in Bosnia! Bosnia only has about 10 miles of coastline, so we quickly found ourselves back in Croatia...
Dubrovnik was everything I'd hoped for and more. Before arriving, the only thing I knew about Dubrovnik was that it was one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones (!!!!!) and therefore a MUST SEE. This prior knowledge was all I needed. Dubrovnik is magical, ancient and perfect for any tourist, Game of Thrones fan or not. (Though being a fan totally helps)
I kept humming the intro song for GoT whilst here, especially while we kayaked the Adriatic..
Our time in Dubrovnik was spent swimming in the clearest waters I've ever seen, walking slick thousand year old marble stones, climbing fortress walls and towers, counting stray cats, eating ice cream and meandering winding alleys filled with towering steps. Not only was the city completely cool, we also happened to stay at the perfect apartment. We rented from airbnb and had the lower level of a divided villa all to ourselves, complete with ocean views, a view of the Old Town, wonderfully helpful hosts and air conditioning. I might just move back...However, there was one drawback to this enchanting getaway: the tourists.
Now I know what you're thinking as you narrow your eyes skeptically: "but Kat! YOU'RE a tourist too!" Yes, yes I am, however I am not one of the thousands who come off the cruise ships for an afternoon and leave by sunset. Alissa and I could barely walk through the Old Town on our way to kayaking one morning simply because the streets were so packed with tour groups, all led by men and women waving flags on sticks, umbrellas and signs. I was so glad to be out on the water instead of inside with the masses. And while we were there it was still technically the off season...
NOW PICTURES.
That's all, folks! Next stop, Plitvitce Lakes.
